The American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery is the world's largest scientific organization dedicated to promoting research, education and high standards of clinical care in the field of medical laser applications. It provides a forum for the exchange of scientific information and participates in communicating the latest developments in laser medicine and surgery to clinicians, research investigators, government and regulatory agencies, and the public.
The Society has taken the lead in formulating standards and guidelines for establishing safe, effective laser programs in hospitals and other institutions and has recommended standards for medical laser training programs. It also has a leading role in government relations in the field of biomedical lasers.
Laser therapeutics have become an essential element in clinical practice in contemporary medicine and surgery. In a number of surgical specialties, lasers are indispensable and new medical laser technologies and techniques continue to be developed. It is well acknowledged that a particular laser application in one specialty frequently has relevance to as yet undiscovered applications in one or more other specialties.
The Society has a broad base of membership including physicians and surgeons, nurses, and other health professionals involved in laser treatment of patients, physicists who develop devices, biomedical engineers who adapt them for medical purposes, and biologists who investigate the interaction of laser light with tissue. It is a mission of the Society to develop programs to address the common interests of all whose work involves biomedical lasers, as well as to foster interdisciplinary dialogue, development, and fellowship among them.
The Annual Scientific Conference of the Society is the largest conference on laser therapy and biology held in the United States. More than 300 scientific papers are presented annually, and symposia in each specialty as well as common areas of interest are included in the scientific sessions to acquaint conferees with the latest developments and state-of-the-art clinical use of lasers. The plenary sessions, intended to be of interest to all attendees, provide an update and overview in the variety of specialties. Specialty sessions which deal in detail with specific areas of laser applications comprise the other major part of the scientific program. Conferees are free to attend the specialty breakout sessions and individual lectures of their choice, to develop individualized programs suiting their particular needs and interests. Prior to the conference, courses in laser biophysics with surgical applications, laser nursing and other medical specialties provide further educational opportunities. A large number of commercial exhibits, displaying all types of medical laser instrumentation are included.
Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, the Society's official journal, is the most prestigious and widely circulated peer reviewed scientific journal dedicated to basic and applied aspects of laser therapy and diagnosis. The journal publishes clinical as well as basic science reports and is important reading for clinicians who wish to be abreast of the most recent scientific developments in biomedical laser applications, as well as researchers investigating laser/tissue interaction, new laser techniques and/or technology. Lasers in Surgery and Medicine appears ten times each year, including an abstract issue for the ASLMS Annual Conference.
