Micro-manipulated probe systems

Since 1961 Janis Research Company has been providing the scientific and technical community with the highest-quality cryogenic equipment for research, characterization, and industrial applications. Over the years, our family of customers has grown to include some of the world's largest corporations and best-known research centers and institutions. The reasons for this record of success are simple: precision engineering and quality manufacturing; ease-of-operation; day-after-day reliability and performance; and a level of service and support unmatched in the industry.

Janis Research recognizes that obtaining a cryogenic system represents a long-term commitment for most scientists; therefore, we are devoted to providing you with the highest level of quality and customer support. Just a few of the ways we accomplish this are:

  • Sales and service are provided through a worldwide network of trained and knowledgeable representatives.
  • A dedicated Janis Research sales engineer is responsible for each system fromconceptual design through post-installation support.
  • A stableworkforce draws on decades of combined service, and applies thisexperience to the assembly of each cryogenic system.
  • Customerapproval of the final design drawing is obtained for all customizedsystems.
  • Records on all systems, modifications and design improvements are meticulouslymaintained for the reference of any future user.
  • Turnkeysystems are supplied by offering a full line of cryogenic accessories.
  • Each system is fully integrated and tested before shipping.

Janis moved to its Wilmington, MA manufacturing and sales office in 1983 where it continued to grow and prosper.

In 1996, Janis received a NASA Public Service Group Achievement Award for the SIRTF test cryostat, delivered to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for characterization of mirrors at liquid Helium temperatures.

In 1998, Janis was awarded a R&D 100 Award for the development of a capillary cooling cryostat, allowing the disciplines of FLNS and capillary electrophoresis to be combined for the first time.

In late 1998, Janis acquired RMC Cryosystems adding a number of new product lines for the scientific, engineering, and medical technology markets.

In mid-1999, Janis initiated an employee ownership plan. All Janis employees are now shareholders in its future and are rededicated to providing the scientific community with the best in cryogenic products and service.

In mid-2000, Janis received another NASA Public Service Group Achievement Award, again from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. This time it was for Janis' performance on the FACET program, the development of a cryostat to comply with the Shuttle Hitchhiker program and providing a platform for microgravity experimentation. This second PSGAA, for a small company, is without precedent in the history of the JPL program and perhaps in all of NASA.

In early 2005, Janis Research completed construction of a 6,000 square foot building addition at its existing location in Wilmington, Massachusetts. This new test and assembly area is equipped with state of the art cryogenic working stations along with an ultra high vacuum station, ultra low vibration section and an ultra low temperature facility. This addition was primarily built to expand our manufacturing capabilities to support the current demands of the scientific community for more sensitive measuring instruments and more sophisticated cryogenic systems.

In late 2010, Janis Research completed an expansion of their Wilmington, Massachusetts manufacturing facility and began 2011 with the entire manufacturing operation under one roof. (The machine shop department had been relocated in a building next door for about two years.) The expansion fostered continuity of manufacturing processes and allowed improved flow of product, materials, and communications within the company. Lean manufacturing objectives were continuing to be implemented, leading to improved throughput and improvement in on-time delivery to customers.

The increased availability of floor space created by the 8,000 square foot building expansion and the Lean manufacturing practices were anticipated to provide ample room for the growth Janis Research has been experiencing over the past several years. The newly created space housed the shipping and receiving departments, system integration area for large systems, and additional office space to accommodate the increase in staff required to meet continued growth in business.

In June 2013, Janis Research moved into its new 67,000 square foot company headquarters in Woburn, Massachusetts. The larger facility more than doubled Janis' space and will support the continued growth of all Janis product lines, including cryogen-free, liquid helium/nitrogen cooled, and ultra-low temperature systems. Sales, engineering, design, manufacturing and testing functions are housed in our Woburn facility.
