Definitive measurement of electron neutrino appearance at T2K

The T2K collaboration, of which the T2K QMUL neutrino group is a founding member, announced definitive observation of muon neutrino to electron neutrino transformation on April 19th, at the EPS conference in Stockholm.

Definitive measurement of electron neutrino appearance at T2K

This is the first observation of this phenomena in a long baseline neutrino experiment, and it opens the doors to the investigation of CP violation that will be carried out in the future by T2K and its planned upgrade Hyper-Kamiokande. This could lead to the understanding of matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe, that is one of the major unanswered questions in physics. The QMUL Group directly contributed to this measurement through the analysis of the near detector data.
