The Department of Physics and Mathematics at the University of Hull was formed in the summer of 2012. However, Physics at Hull has a much longer history and departments of both Physics and Applied Physics have existed in some form for more than 50 years. We have a growing undergraduate population that has seen year-on-year increases in size. There is an active research community that falls into the three broad areas given below. This work is often applied in nature and we collaborate closely with industrial partners to solve real-world problems whilst also exploring the basic science that is involved.
Theory of Condensed Matter
The primary focus of this group is condensed matter physics, encompassing both soft and hard matter systems.
Experimental Solid State Physics
Research encompasses the areas of organophotonics, extreme conditions and nanophysics
Lasers and Microfabrication
This work focuses on the development and characterization of pulsed lasers and the interaction of optical radiation with materials.
